DAY 1: SAMBURU INTREPIDS TENTED CAMP, SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE
Samburu National Reserve
Resting on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River and neighbouring the Buffalo Springs National Park, Samburu National Reserve is remote, hot and arid. The reserve spans over 165 square kilometres of spectacularly scenic landscape featuring rugged hills, undulating plains and riverine forests. The park is home to abundant wildlife including a variety of rare species such as the reticulated giraffe, the long necked gerenuk, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s Zebra and Beisa Oryx. Samburu was one of the homes of ‘Elsa the Lioness’, star of the bestselling book and award-winning movie ‘Born Free’. Visitors can enjoy viewing over 900 elephants, a variety of predators, and over 450 bird species.
Day Itinerary
Early morning arrival into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi, meet & greet by AMA Safaris and thereafter depart for Samburu National Reserve. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon proceed for a game drive till sun set. Dinner and overnight at Samburu Intrepid Camp – LDBB
Overnight: Samburu Intrepids Tented Camp
Dry, rugged and stunning, Samburu’s landscape is at once stark and sensual, with its iconic loaf shaped Lolokowe Mountain and hills spreading in every horizon. Its life lung is the Usao Nyiro River coursing through its craggy terrain full of stone, thorn bush and the forked doum palms. In this arid zone where water is scarce and the land baked by the eternal sun, herds of elephants and the big cats roam the plains with the Samburu special – the Reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and the long necked antelope, the gerenuk easily seen despite its harsh climes.
Located 345km² north of Nairobi, the journey to the camp involves a 50-minute flight to the Samburu airstrip followed by a 20-minute drive through the reserve.

Covering almost 50’000 acres, Mugie Conservancy provides a key wildlife access route between the Laikipia plateau, the Mathews Range and the Samburu lands to the north and east. Vast acacia-dotted savannahs, scrubland and olive forests are a haven to a multitude of wildlife in plentiful numbers, including all the big cats, buffalo, elephants and endemic northern Kenyan species such as Grevy’s Zebra, Jackson’s Hartebeet and Reticulated Giraffe.
Mugie Conservancy is at the forefront of modern conservation models, operating as a low-impact cattle ranch alongside preserving the delicate eco-systems. Cutting edge community grazing and livestock trading programs have engaged the local community as stakeholders in the protection and conservation of Mugie. Also supporting wildlife research by Cheetah and Wild Dog Project and Lion Landscapes, Mugie Conservancy is a successful 21st century model of profitable conservation.
