DAY 1: AMBOSELI SOPA LODGE, AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

Amboseli National Park

Located in the southern reaches of Kenya, the Amboseli National Park is renowned for its excellent variety of wildlife such as Masaai giraffe, elephant, lion and cheetah and not surprisingly it is one of Kenya’s most popular parks. The landscape of Amboseli is dominated by the majestic snow cap of Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as open plains, acacia woodland, swamps and the massif of Ol Doinyo Orok. The birding is excellent, especially closer to the lakes and swamps. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to large herds of elephants among other wildlife species. Other attractions of the park include opportunities to meet the Maasai people and soak up spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Day Itinerary

Early morning a warm welcome awaits you upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by our AMA Safaris tour manager/driver guide (ETA TBA), meet and greet and thereafter depart for Amboseli National Park. Amboseli is set at the foot of the most famous symbol of Africa. Mt Kilimanjaro broods high over Amboseli, generally cloaked by clouds but appearing in all its snow-shrouded magnificence from time to time.

Kilimanjaro was once part of Kenya, but on the marriage of Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, Queen Victoria gifted it to her beloved grandson, whose colony Tanzania then was, as the perfect wedding present. The mountain now provides water for the park, wonderful views and, of course, the most glorious background for animal photography. Late evening game drive. Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Sopa Lodge – LDBB.

Overnight: Amboseli Sopa Lodge  or similar category.

Nestled in 190 acres of wooded Masai land, the Lodge sits on the foothills of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.  Mature wooded gardens with a variety of trees and plants thrive in these surroundings.  Different species of birds, monkeys and squirrels dart through the gardens. There are 83 rooms in total; some with interconnecting doors – ideal for families – and 24 rooms can be turned into triples on request.  Two rooms are suitable for the physically challenged, and one room is a honeymoon suite.  The rooms are constructed as individual huts, and they are all spacious, with en-suite bathrooms and verandahs.  Local materials and colours are used for furnishings, maintaining the African theme.  The totally private and spacious honeymoon suite has an ornamental fireplace and kitchenette.  A spacious verandah surrounds the suite, ideal for viewing the mountain in its glory.

DAY 2: AMBOSELI SOPA LODGE, AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

Day Itinerary

Spend a full day in Amboseli with morning & afternoon game drives. Or Opt for Full day game drives with Picnic Lunch Boxes in the Park.

All meals and overnight at Amboseli Sopa Lodge, LDBB

Departure: 0630hrs. (Coffee / tea at 0615hrs.)

Breakfast: 0900hrs.

During the first hours of the morning, the savannah is filled with a special animation. This is when the larger predators hunt for their food, before the temperature becomes too hot for any excessive physical activity. This is the time we have the highest chances of watching a hunt in action (also likely in the early evening). The colours of the landscape are also more accentuated, and help us to take great photographs.

Amboseli is an enormous volcanic plateau, almost totally eroded and dry, and is dominated by the majestic peaks of the eternally snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, with a height of almost 6000metres above sea level, earning itself the name “The rooftop of Africa”.

Curiously, and somewhat due to the good filtration of the volcanic rocks, this arid landscape contains several marshes and swamps, whose waters attract an extensive assortment of wildlife: gazelles, impalas, gerenuks, zebras, wildebeest, buffalos and lions, among others, finding solace in this harsh country. However, the biggest attraction of the park is the elephants, ambling along in huge herds with the incomparable Mt. Kilimanjaro as a backdrop.
