DAY 3: META BONI CONSILII, BUTARE
Butare
Once Rwanda’s largest city, today Butare (also known as Huye) serves as the intellectual and cultural heart of the nation. Situated in the south, in Huye Province, this small and sedate city boasts some quiet tree-lined streets featuring a range of hotels, terraced restaurants and craft shops.
The most appealing of Butare’s attractions is undoubtedly the National Museum of Rwanda, one of the finest museums in East Africa, showcasing the cultural history of the region through displays of photos and traditional artifacts. Other highlights include the Christian Cathedral and Nyanza, the traditional seat of Rwanda’s feudal monarchy and the site of the restored 19th-century Royal Palace.

After breakfast, drive south to Nyanza, the historical seat of the Rwanda kingdom; visit the Royal Palace which has been restored, entirely of traditional materials, to its 19th century grandeur.

DAY 4: NYUNGWE TOP VIEW HILL HOTEL, NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARK
Nyungwe Forest National Park
Situated in south-western Rwanda, the Nyungwe Forest National Park is known for its exceptional biodiversity and its wide range of endemic species. The park is composed of lush tracts of rainforest set high up on fertile mountain slopes. It is one of Africa’s most ancient forests and the home of Rwanda’s sole remaining chimpanzee population, as well as 85 additional mammal species, 43 reptile species, nearly 300 bird species and over 1000 plant species. Visitors can enjoy spotting colobus monkeys and chimpanzees hiding in the trees, hiking on a well-maintained network of trails passing through lush equatorial rainforest and catching a glimpse of a beautiful array of colourful birdlife. After Breakfast, you will now continue your safari to Nyungwe Top Hill View Lodge for a check -in. In the afternoon, you will go for a canopy walk.

Canopy Walks Nyungwe Forest
The canopy walk takes place four times a day (0800hrs, 1000hrs, 1300hrs and 1700hrs). The experience lasts around 2 hours total, with a 30 minute walk to the bridge, 1 hour on the bridge and a walk back. The forest walkway bridge provides the ideal opportunity to spot Colobus Monkeys and birdlife. At its central point the bridge reaches a height of around (90m).

Day Itinerary
This morning you will be taken for a chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest. Although it’s possible to trek chimp in Nyungwe, it’s a difficult trek with a 50 % chance of seeing them.
This is in a very hilly terrain (high ridges and deep valleys) in a rain-forest and the Chimps themselves only semi-habituated and tending to move far and wide over a large area. This makes the tracking hard and unpredictable and sighting the chimps hard to guarantee.

DAY 6: MORIAH HILL RESORT, LAKE KIVU
Lake Kivu
One of Africa’s Great Lakes, Kivu is the sixth-largest and eighteenth-deepest lake in the world, covering a whopping surface area of roughly 2,700km² and reaching to almost 500m at its maximum depth. Three vibrant resort towns – Kibuye, Gisenyi and Cyangugu – located on its shores provides an array of lodging options, while the steep hills that surround it are peppered with forests and waterfalls.
Water sports enthusiasts will have a field day at Lake Kivu, and bird watchers are likely to be equally thrilled by the lake’s diverse menagerie of avian species.

DAY 8: MUTANDA LAKE RESORT, LAKE MUTANDA
Lake Mutanda
Situated in Uganda, Lake Mutanda is a small freshwater lake sandwiched between the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the Virunga Mountains. Set against a misty mountain backdrop, the picturesque lake is dotted with islands, and the surrounding landscape is scattered with wetland ecosystems and lakeside forests stretching up the mountain slopes which provide a safe habitat for the endangered mountain gorilla.

After breakfast, you will be picked by your driver guide and transferred to the Uganda Rwanda Border for immigration clearance, clocks adjusted to one hour ahead, you will cross over to Uganda for a check-in at Mutanda Lake Resort.

DAY 9: MUTANDA LAKE RESORT, LAKE MUTANDA
Day Itinerary
After breakfast, you will be picked by your guide and transferred to the park headquarters for briefing and allocation of porters.
You will then start your Gorilla trekking adventure, on meeting the gorillas, you are allowed an hour with them before trekking back to the base where your driver guide will be waiting to transfer you to the lodge .
In the afternoon, you will be taken for a community walk.

Gorilla Trekking
Wake early for a hearty breakfast to give you the energy needed for Gorilla Trekking. Before 0800hrs, report to the ranger station for registration and a talk by one of the rangers. The guides will then take you through the bush, pushing your way through the undergrowth, to track the gorillas. (Please note this trek can take from 30 minutes to 5 hrs – 6 hrs).
A reasonable degree of fitness is required, as well as a sturdy pair of walking shoes. Sit in the forest among the gorillas, listening to them ‘talk’ to one another, and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male, the Silverback. It is an extraordinary feeling sitting in the dense rainforest knowing you are with a few of the last remaining mountain gorillas. It’s amazing to think there are only about 650 of these beautiful creatures left.

DAY 10: MWEYA SAFARI LODGE, QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Located in south-western Uganda, the Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the county’s most popular parks. Volcanic craters, grassy plains, tropical forest and giant lakes connected by a channel inhabited by abundant hippos, are what you will see at the Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The park has almost 100 types of mammal and 606 different bird species, including the peculiar shoebill. The Kasinga Channel alone is said to contain the world’s largest concentration of hippos, and other wildlife includes buffalo, the rare aquatic sitatunga antelope, giant forest hog, Uganda kob, Defassa waterbuck and elephant. Don’t miss the Kyambura Gorge, which is home to habituated chimpanzees.

After breakfast, you will now depart for Queen Elizabeth National park for a check-in at Mweya safari lodge. Late afternoon, you will be taken on a game drive.

DAY 12: CASSIA LODGE, KAMPALA
Kampala
Bordering the magnificent Lake Victoria, Uganda’s capital city – Kampala – sprawl out over a series of undulating hills and despite the development, this ‘Garden City’ is known for its tree-lined avenues.
This bustling city serves as the commercial hub of the country boasting a blend of African markets, modern skyscrapers, international hotels, bars, and casinos. It provides an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding area.
Visitors can look forward to learning about the country’s rich and colourful history at the Uganda Museum; enjoying a number of activities on Lake Victoria, Africa’s Largest Lake; and visiting the Namugongo Martyrs Shrines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the nearby Mburo National Park to catch a glimpse of local wildlife including: hippo, zebra, gazelles, crocodiles, warthog, and variety of birdlife.

DAY 13: 2 FRIENDS GUEST HOUSE, JINJA
Jinja
Situated on the northern shores of Africa’s largest lake, in southern Uganda, Jinja is the second largest city in Uganda and is famous for being located at the source of the Nile. The rapids on the Nile make Jinja the white water rafting capital of East Africa. It is also known as the adventure capital of Uganda.
While the main attraction is undoubtedly rafting down the Nile, there are also a variety of other adrenaline filled activities such as: quad biking, bungee jumping, kayaking, and mountain biking and horse riding.
Other popular activities include: browsing the colourful Jinja market, viewing the faded grandeur of the crumbling colonial architecture lining the streets and joining a bicycle tour to soak up the spectacularly scenic surrounds.
Day Itinerary
After breakfast, you will be picked by your driver guide and transferred to Jinja, with stops at Mabira forest and Sugar cane plantations, you will check-in at 2 Friends. In the afternoon, you will visit the source of the Nile and then return to your hotel for a relaxed rest of the evening.
