The undeniable highlight of the Masai Mara is undoubtedly the annual wildebeest migration traversing the vast plains of the Serengeti and the Masai Mara.
It is known as the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. Large prides of lions, elephants, giraffes, gazelles and eland can also be spotted in the reserve. Aside from horse riding safaris and traditional vehicle safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Mara plains has become almost essential.

DAY 3: SANCTUARY OLONANA CAMP, MASAI MARA
Day Itinerary
Immerse yourself in the splendour of the Masai mara, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife reserves. Discover the park’s iconic creatures on an Optional Hot Air Balloon safari at sunrise, and set out in a 4×4 on morning and afternoon safaris through the golden grasslands. With luck, spot all of Africa’s “Big five”—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo.
After breakfast venture out on an early morning shared game drives safari to track the animals that traversed the savannah during the night. View ungulates like Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, topi and eland antelopes -as well as their stealthy predators – at one of their most active times of the day. During the first hours of the morning, the savannah is filled with a special animation. This is when the larger predators hunt for their food, before the temperature becomes too hot for any excessive physical activity. This is the time we have the highest chances of watching a hunt in action (also likely in the early evening). The colours of the landscape are also more accentuated, and help us to take great photographs.
Continue your exploration as you head out for an afternoon shared game drive safari through vast, discovering the timeless landscape, acacia-dotted plains, driving past throngs of wildebeest, zebra, and giraffes; and keep an eye out for lions, elephants, and the rest of the African “big five.” In the evening, relax at the Sanctuary Olonana Camp and enjoy scenic views of the rolling plains. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Another inhabitant of the park is the Crocodile, the boss of the river, lying camouflaged in wait for any unsuspecting victim to come its way.
