DAY 1: FAIRMONT THE NORFOLK, NAIROBI      

Nairobi

Situated in along the Nairobi River in beautiful Kenya, the capital of Nairobi is East Africa’s most cosmopolitan city. It serves as an excellent starting point for African safari trips around Kenya. Nairobi is Africa’s 4th largest city and is a vibrant and exciting place, and although it has developed a reputation which keeps tourist visits brief, there are some fascinating attractions: its cafe culture, unbridled nightlife, the National Museum, the Karen Blixen Museum, Giraffe Centre and most notably just 20 minutes from the city centre wild lions and buffalo roam in the world’s only urban game reserve. Make sure you pay a visit to the Elephant orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Day Itinerary

On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International airport clear with customs and immigration, thereafter you will be greeted by your friendly AMA Safaris representative outside the baggage hall.

Later, proceed to your hotel for check in where you will be entertained by local traditional dancers as you sip your welcome drink. Check in and dinner will be at the hotel – DBB

DAY 2:  FAIRMONT THE NORFOLK, NAIROBI     

Day Itinerary

Today after breakfast at approximately 0900hrs our representative will pick you and head to the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant orphanage where you will get a chance to interact with the orphaned young elephants before they are released back to the wilderness. Later proceed for lunch at the Tamambo Restaurant. In the afternoon visit the Giraffe centre in time for the feeding programme and visit the Karen Blixen Museum for an educational tour.

In the evening proceed for dinner at the famous Carnivore restaurant.

DAY 3:  ELEPHANT BEDROOM CAMP, SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE   

Samburu National Reserve

Resting on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River and neighbouring the Buffalo Springs National Reserve, Samburu National Reserve is remote, hot and arid. The reserve spans over 165km² of spectacularly scenic landscape featuring rugged hills, undulating plains and riverine forests. The park is home to abundant wildlife including a variety of rare species such as the reticulated giraffe, the long necked gerenuk, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s Zebra and Beisa Oryx. Samburu was one of the homes of ‘Elsa the Lioness’, star of the bestselling book and award-winning movie ‘Born Free’. Visitors can enjoy viewing over 900 elephants, a variety of predators, and over 450 bird species.

Day Itinerary

After breakfast drive to Samburu National Reserve located at the North rugged Semi desert region. Samburu National Reserve is well known for spectacular scenery and wildlife not found in the south: Reticulated Giraffe, the rare Grevy’s Zebra with its large furry ears, the Gerenuk antelope standing on its hind legs to feed and Somali Ostriches with their distinctive blue legs. Lunch upon arrival at your lodge then proceed on a game drive. Dinner and overnight at camp

Overnight: Elephant Bedroom Camp         

Set on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu National Reserve surrounded by doum palms and other beautiful indigenous trees and shrubs sits this small and exclusive camp of 12 luxury tents – all furnished in rustic African style while offering all the comforts expected of a luxury Camp (hot & cold running water, electricity and herbal products).

The lounge and dining area offer vibrant safari colours with original oil paintings, soft intimate lighting designed to relax guests returning from an exciting game drive. Huge herds of elephant, prides of lion or the solitary leopard amongst other game are regular visitors around the camp providing excellent game viewing in spectacular scenic background of rugged rolling hills. DAY 4:  ELEPHANT BEDROOM CAMP, SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE   

Day Itinerary

Full day in Samburu with morning and afternoon game drive. Early morning game drive and return to the lodge for breakfast.

The landscape is dry and semidesertic in the Shaba-Samburu area, except for a scattering of small bushes, and the narrow strip of greenery bordering the Ewaso Nyiro River. The appeal of Shaba-Samburu lies in its wildlife, unique to the area. This includes the Grevy’s or Imperial zebra, whose stripes are finer than those of its cousin the Burchell zebra; The Gerenuk or giraffe-antelope, with its peculiar manner of feeding on leaves while standing on its hind legs; the pretty Reticulated Giraffe; the masked Oryx, and the blue-legged Somali Ostrich. Another inhabitant of the park is the Crocodile, the big boss of the river, lying camouflaged in wait for any unsuspecting victim to come its way.

We could chance upon some secretive leopards, lying hidden between the branches of the trees, while impalas and Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelles innocently feed nearby. Late morning return for Lunch. Afternoon game drive.

DAY 5:  FAIRMONT MOUNT KENYA SAFARI CLUB, NANYUKI        

Nanyuki

This small equatorial town is a popular thoroughfare for hikers climbing Mount Kenya via the Burguret or Sirimon routes, and consequently has a wide array of accommodation options and a few good restaurants, including Barney’s, known for its fine cuisine, and the Trout Tree, housed inside the trunk of an enormous tree and serving several variations of this freshwater fish. The town boasts excellent views of the mountain, while the surrounding region encompasses several reserves, including Mount Kenya National Park, Samburu National Reserve, Ol pejeta Conservancy, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Shaba National Reserve.

Day Itinerary

After breakfast proceed to Mount Kenya Safari Club in time for sumptuous lunch. This club was founded by Hollywood star William Holden going back several decades, and is now a Fairmont hotels property. En route to the club, you will stop at the Equator crossing, after which you arrive at the hotel and proceed for check in. The Club offers several activities such as golf, horse riding and nature hikes. DAY 6:  LAKE ELMENTEITA SERENA CAMP, LAKE ELMENTEITA        

Lake Elmenteita

Elmenteita, meaning ‘place of dust’, is a small soda lake which attracts many visiting flamingos. It has been named as a World Heritage Site for its prolific birdlife. This is where Kenya’s most famous settler Lord Delamere lived and he was responsible for much of Kenya’s early agricultural experimentation in the fertile area, the area is still inhabited by some of his descendants. The shores are often alive with wildlife and the surrounding forests are perfect for long walks and birding. Visitors can look forward to visiting the Kekopey hot springs, spotting over 400 bird species and game viewing along the lake’s edge, which is abundant with eland, kudu, zebra, gazelle, and warthog families.

After breakfast at approximately 0800hrs drive to Lake Elmenteita Serena arriving in time for check in and lunch. In the afternoon proceed for a close view game drive at the expansive Soysambu Game Reserve .Spend the rest of the evening at leisure with local activities available booked and paid locally. Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp is located in Kenya’s Soysambu Conservancy and features spectacular views of the surrounding volcanoes. DAY 8:  MARA SERENA SAFARI LODGE, MARA TRIANGLE

Masai Mara

One of Kenya’s undisputed natural highlights is the Masai Mara National Reserve, which sprawls across more than 1500km² of the country’s southwest. The park protects a phenomenal array of game, including charismatic species such as elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo, as well as crocodile and hippopotamus in the Mara River. The bird life is no less impressive, with over 450 resident bird species. However, the true highlight here is the Great Migration, recognized as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. To survive the dry months of July to September, some 1.7 million wildebeest migrate from the parched plains of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Along with much smaller numbers of antelope buffalo and zebra, they move to the more forgiving grasslands of the Masai Mara. In their wake come predators such as lion, hyena and cheetah, for whom these giant herds are an easy source of prey.

Day Itinerary

After breakfast at approximately 0700hrs drive to the world-famous Masai Mara via the Great Rift Valley. En route enjoy the beautiful scenery. Stop at the view point and get mesmerized by the sweeping rift valley floor under. Our driver guide will point out the Longonot Extinct Volcano area and you can stop briefly for a photo session.  Mount Longonot is a strato volcano located southeast of Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, Africa. It is thought to have last erupted in the 1860s. Its name is derived from the Maasai word Oloonong’ot, meaning “mountains of many spurs” or “steep ridges.

Arrive and transfer to your lodge in time for lunch and check in at the lodge. In the afternoon, enjoy an enthralling game-viewing drive at the Mara Spotting lions, cheetahs and other spectacular predators is the highlight of your day. Dinner and overnight at your lodge

DAY 9: MARA SERENA SAFARI LODGE, MARA  TRIANGLE

Day Itinerary

Early morning Hot Air Balloon ride with champagne style breakfast. Balloon flights typically take off at 0630hrs. Passengers arrive in time to watch the balloon inflation as the pilots torch the colored fabric to life. The flight is for one hour, each one different path and following the days prevailing winds. A Balloon flight allows passengers to float over the world’s most spectacular game reserve, and offers a magical bird’s eye view of the wildlife the Mara is famous for. On landing, the balloon crew sets up a full champagne breakfast complete with “Bloody Mary’s” on the Mara plains. Each passenger then receives a certificate from their pilot as a special memoir of their flight. There are balloons with a flying capacity of 16 passengers and of 12 passengers

Later drive back to the lodge. After lunch proceed on an afternoon game drive.

After breakfast, proceed on a full-day game-viewing drive to search for the myriad species of game that make this reserve their home. If you are lucky, you can witness the kill in action, moment by moment, right in front of your unbelieving eyes! Picnic lunch will be at one of the designated sites. Later proceed for another exciting game drive where you can expect to see the famous ‘Big 5’.

DAY 11:  ELEWANA SERENGETI MIGRATION CAMP, NORTHERN SERENGETI

Northern Serengeti

The vast, rolling savannah of the Northern Serengeti is known as the hub of the great migration. The landscape is characterized by vast stretches of savannah interspersed with acacia trees and riverine woodlands. Wildlife can be seen along the banks of the Mara River and visitors can view the annual spectacle of the half a million migrating wildebeest. Commonly spotted wildlife include: a multitude of plains game such as buffalo, zebra, gazelles, impala, giraffe as well as lion and leopard. Visitors can look forward to bird watching, hot air ballooning, game safaris and guided bush walks.

Day Itinerary

After breakfast at the lodge in Maasai mara depart for Serengeti. Met at the Isebania border of Kenya/Tanzania immigration formalities and proceed to Serengeti National Park which is undoubtedly the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and the greatest concentration of plains game anywhere. With its wide-open spaces, bright blue skies and creature-filled landscape, over the next days we will discover why the fabled Serengeti typifies the dream of “Old Africa.” Large prides of lions laze in the long grasses; plentiful families of elephants feed on acacia bark and trumpet to each other across the plains, while giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, eland and the whole range of African wildlife present themselves in awe-inspiring numbers) Arrive for check in and a game drive en route with dinner and overnight at your camp

DAY 13: LEMALA NGORONGORO TENTED CAMP, NGORONGORO CRATER

Ngorongoro Crater

Located in Northern Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Crater is best known for its natural beauty and abundance of diverse wildlife; which makes it one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations. Surrounded by Tanzania’s highlands, this UNESCO-listed crater is said to be the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Visitors can look forward to spotting the world-renowned Big Five and a host of other wildlife species including large herds of zebra and wildebeest. It is famed as one of Tanzania’s best tourist attractions offering visitors an array of wonderful activities including excellent bird watching, trekking, wildlife viewing, mountain biking and visiting a local Maasai village. Don’t miss the opportunity to jump on an excursion to the magnificent Olduvai Gorge.

Lemala Ngorongoro is intimately set in a delightful ancient acacia forest close to the rim of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater. As it is located next to the quiet Lemala crater access road on the eastern side, a key advantage of staying at Lemala Ngorongoro is the quick and easy drive down on to the crater floor in the morning; Lemala guests usually have an hour’s head start over others descending via the far busier Seneto crater access road on the western rim. Game drives from camp may start as early as 6.15am and guests can be down among Ngorongoro’s abundant wildlife on the floor within 10-15 minutes – crucial for photographers who demand the best light conditions. Escorted walks are also available into the forest and along the crater rim with an armed ranger and Maasai guide.

Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp has 9 spacious tents that are positioned carefully to provide privacy and with minimal impact on the pristine forest environment. They accommodate two queen-size beds, and as it can get cool on the Ngorongoro Crater rim at night, little luxuries like warm winter-weight duvets, hot water bottles and gas heaters ensure a cosy night’s sleep.

DAY 15:  LAKE MANYARA KILIMAMOJA LDG, LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

Lake Manyara National Park

Situated in Tanzania’s central-northern region with the Lake Manyara on its east and the Manyara Escarpment to its west, the Lake Manyara National Park offers breathtaking views and a large variety of habitats supporting an array of wildlife. This small park is home to surprising biodiversity and features a magnificent landscape of acacia woodlands, water forests, baobab strewn cliffs, algae-streaked hot springs, swamps and the lake itself. The park supports 400 species of bird, and the largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the world. Other species include giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, warthog, the Cape clawless otter, and Egyptian mongoose. Don’t miss the opportunity to see thousands of flamingos on the lake, the renowned tree-climbing lions, and large families of elephants strolling through the forest.

After breakfast at leisure drive to Lake Manyara National Park. This beautiful park is at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment and comprises of forest, woodland, grasslands, and swamps. Gazelles; impala; buffalo; wildebeest; the famous tree climbing lion; hyenas; baboon; giraffe; hippopotamus; and a great number of smaller mammals; 350 species of bird, storks and flamingos Apart from its abundant bird and animal life is known for its tree-climbing lions. Arrive in time for check in and lunch. Afternoon proceed on a pm game drive. Dinner and overnight at lodge.

Overnight: Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge       

Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge is nestled on the rim of the Great African Rift Valley with stunning views of Lake Manyara, Mount Meru and on a clear day, Mount Kilimanjaro. The lodge is situated in lush green gardens and local vegetation with over 130 species of bird. It offers an ideal place in which to base a northern safari experience. The Ngorongoro Crater, Oldeani, Lake Eyasi, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Highlands are just a short drive away from the lodge. Sitting around the outside fireplace watching the sun setting over the Great Rift Valley and listening to the humming of the birds in the background is a fitting way to end the day, and preparing for a sumptuous dinner feast.

DAY 16: ELEWANA ARUSHA COFFEE LODGE, ARUSHA  

Arusha

Resting at the foot of Mount Meru, the sprawling city of Arusha is known as the safari capital of northern Tanzania. It serves as an excellent base from which to explore the remarkably scenic surrounding area which includes majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as the Manyara, Tarangire and Ngorongoro National Parks. Arusha is a good spot to take a day or two off from the safari circuit as it features a temperate climate and lush surrounds. Visitors can look forward to exploring the wildlife-abundant Serengeti National Park; the magnificent Arusha National Park; and taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Meru, Africa’s fifth highest mountain.

After breakfast drive to Arusha in time for lunch at the cultural Heritage Center. Later shop around the centre and transfer to your Arusha hotel for dinner and overnight

DAY 18: BARAZA RESORT & SPA, DONGWE ZANZIBAR

Day Itinerary

After breakfast you will be picked by our driver guide and head to stone town. First we start with the market where local fruits and vegetables are sold. Continue to see the Anglican Church, a site of the old slave market, the State House and the Zanzibar Museum (opened in 1925). Finally visit the historic stone town, famous for its narrow winding alleyways and unique architecture ranging from the 16th century Portuguese Fort to the colonial mansions. Later drive back to your beach hotel for lunch, rest of the afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight stay,

DAY 19: BARAZA RESORT & SPA, DONGWE ZANZIBAR

Day Itinerary

After breakfast you will be picked by our driver guide and head to stone town. Drive into the hinterland to visit one of the spice plantations. Soak up the smells of vanilla, cloves, cardamom and a myriad of other spices and exotic fruits. Clove trees were introduced in Zanzibar in 1818, which formed the main trade for the island, becoming known as the ‘gold’ of Zanzibar. You will see endless rows of coconut palms. Along the route you can visit the Maruhubi Palace, built by Sultan Bargash in 1880, to house his harem. Later drive back to your beach hotel for lunch, rest of the afternoon at leisure.
