Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)

One of the original natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls is a World Heritage Site and an extremely popular tourism attraction. Known locally as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ this spectacle is accessible from both Zambia and Zimbabwe and it is an ideal place to combine a game viewing and water sports. There is excellent fishing, a terrifying bungee jump and arguably the best commercial white water rafting in the world.

Overnight: Shongwe Lookout

Shongwe Lookout is an exciting new build, 23-bedroom lodge in the suburbs of Victoria Falls. It is located roughly 1 kilometre from Victoria Falls town, and 2 kilometres from the Falls. Our rooms are targeted at the more discerning guest, with quality fittings, elegant decor, and verdant garden surrounds. Our unique offering is a 2-platform lookout tower with views of the Zambezi River, and Falls’ spray.

This tower is open both for early morning coffees, from 0500hrs, and for evening drinks, until 2100hrs. The tower includes an intercom system and a pulley to allow guests to order drinks and nibbles without having to miss a moment of the magical view.

Shongwe Lookout also has an onsite bar and restaurant, the latter offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. An onsite pool and boma area complete the experience.

Chobe River Front

The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park, renowned for its reliable and diverse game viewing. Safaris are conducted both by boat and on land. This section of the park is best known for its elephant and hippo populations but the waters attract all manner of game including large herds of buffalo and the lions that prey on them.

Guided Walks

Even if you have witnessed a thousand elephants, there is nothing like seeing them on foot.  Morning walks within the Forest Reserve is wonderfully rewarding.  In the early mornings, before the African heat arrives, the guides explore the river frontage and open pans within easy reach of the lodge. An opportunity to be totally aware of what is around you and the great African outdoors.

Mokoro Trips

Available when the flood waters arrive on the Western Floodplains – usually April – December.  The mokoro trips depart from in-front of Muchenje and explore the shallow channels and plains.  A wonderful Botswana experience, especially if only visiting the Chobe Region and not continuing onto the Okavango.

Sundown on the Muchenje Plains

A private and exclusive activity that is available for guests during their stay – particularly wonderful if you are staying a many nights and want to arrange the pace of your stay to for a slightly leisurely day – or if you arrive later at Muchenje and still want to explore the area before dinner.

Full Day Excursion with Boat trip on Chobe and game drive

After breakfast the drive will leave from Muchenje and drive to the Jetty on the Eastern side of the park.  Our small private boat will depart at approximately 1130hrs and spend 2.5hours exploring the river.  The guides know where the elephants prefer to congregate, drink and cross to Sedudu Island, so they are making their way to those areas, but on the way they will explore the banks, trees and pools to show the guests the other wonderful wildlife that frequent the Chobe River.

Once the boat finds a suitable crossing or drinking area, the boat rests and the guests enjoy a delicious picnic whilst witnessing the elephants gathering on the banks.  Watching these magnificent animals drinking as the boat gently drifts in the currents is something awe inspiring. The activity returns to the vehicles later and enjoys a slow drive through the park along the river back to the quieter western banks.

Although the full day out is long and dusty, the guests have an amazing opportunity to break the usual safari cycle and get to enjoy a more holistic experience within this amazing region.

Overnight: Muchenje Safari Lodge

Muchenje Safari Lodge is situated on the quieter, western side of Botswana’s Chobe National Park, and only 45 minutes drive from Kasane. The lodge overlooks the Chobe River, and its impressive flood plains. Explore the area on game drives and venture onto the Chobe by boat to witness herds of elephants and the great diversity of game that the area is well known for. Guided bush walks and a visit to the local village are also available.

Khwai Community Area

The Khwai area of the Okavango lies along the northern boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. This is an unfenced boundary allowing wildlife to move freely between the woodlands in the wet season when water is plentiful and back to permanent rivers and lagoons in the dry season.

The Khwai area offers the same wildlife experience as the reserve with the added advantage of being a private concession which means the ability to do walking safaris and night drives.

Mokoro Safaris

No activity is more synonymous with the Okavango Delta than a mokoro trip. Glide silently along the hippo highways and elephant byways of the ancient Khwai River, historically, the only form of transport of the River Bushmen.

Explore this unique inland delta deserving of its World Heritage Site status. Traditionally, fashioned out of a single tree trunk today, mokoro or dugout canoe are fibreglass as a measure to preserve Botswana’s hardwood forests. Learn about the fascinating ecology from our River Guides who navigate your journey through the tranquil watery wilderness. This seasonal activity is available to guests 16 years and older.

Walking Safaris

Awaken your senses and discover all that the bush has to offer when taking part in walking safaris. Guided walking safaris are for guests 16 years and older and are led by our qualified and passionate walking guides who share their knowledge and love of the bush.

For a full day walking safari, a private walking guide will need to be pre-booked with us. With the dry vegetation between May and October, walking safaris are a fantastic and exciting way to experience the area. Since your safety is our first priority, walking safaris are usually conducted when the bush is not too thick and our guides are armed at all times.

Bird Watching

Khwai is a haven for birds, delight in the calls of the Green heron or the African wood owl; photograph the majestic Ayres’s hawk-eagle and Pel’s fishing owl. Or simply sit back and enjoy their beautiful songs.

Overnight: African Bush Camps Khwai Bush Camp

Khwai Leadwood Under Thatch, has found a home on a permanent site on Tsaro Concession, Khwai Community Area. Built on the banks of the Khwai River and nestled amongst a forest of sycamore and leadwood trees, Khwai Leadwood Under Thatch consists of 4 standard and 2 family chalets.

From the sanctuary of a cool thatched interior and a veranda that overlooks the famed Moremi Game Reserve, one of the richest game viewing areas in Botswana, our guests are able to watch the magic of Africa unfold. Boteti River – Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

On the western boundary of the renowned Makgadikgadi Pans National Park lies the Boteti River. Owing to the arid nature of the park, the river and the nutrient-rich western grasslands supply the essential water and sustenance for the wildlife that inhabit the region.

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is home to the second largest zebra migration in the world, where thousands of zebra migrate to the Boteti River in the dry winter months (May to Oct) from their summer grazing ground further inside the park.

The fascinating contrast between the Boteti River and arid national park makes it a fascinating region to include in any Botswana safari.
